Iguazu Falls: A Dual-Nation Natural 7  Wonder

The majestic Iguazu Falls are not merely a single natural attraction but a breathtaking spectacle shared by two distinct national parks: one nestled in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, and the other in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina. While the cascading waters are undoubtedly the primary draw, the sheer scale of these protected areas is equally impressive, encompassing a vast 252,982 hectares. This expansive territory is divided, with 67,720 hectares on the Argentine side and a more substantial 185,262 hectares on the Brazilian side.

The Argentine Side: An Immersive Exploration

The Argentine portion of Iguazu Falls National Park offers visitors the most extensive network of trails and pathways, providing an intimate and multifaceted experience of the falls. Despite its larger tourist infrastructure, the Argentine park is geographically smaller than its Brazilian counterpart, covering 67,720 hectares compared to Brazil’s 185,262 hectares. Located just 18 kilometers from Puerto Iguazú, the park is easily accessible from this city, which serves as the region’s primary hub for accommodation. Travelers often pass through Puerto Iguazú when planning to visit both the Argentine and Brazilian sides of the falls.
For those arriving by air, Puerto Iguazú is approximately a 1 hour and 50-minute flight from Buenos Aires. Bus travel is also an option, though it typically involves a journey of around 20 hours.

Exploring the Argentine Circuits

The Iguazu National Park on the Argentine side boasts six distinct circuits, each offering a unique perspective of the falls and surrounding ecosystem:

  • Superior Circuit: This circuit provides panoramic views of the Iguazu Falls from elevated walkways, excluding the Devil’s Throat. It also offers glimpses of the Lower Circuit. Over approximately 1.75 kilometers, visitors can admire the Dos Hermanas, Chico, Ramirez, Bosetti, Adan and Eva, Mendez, and Mbiguá waterfalls from above. The circuit culminates in an awe-inspiring panoramic vista of both the Argentine and Brazilian national parks, revealing landmarks such as the Meliá Iguazu Hotel, Hotel Belmond Das Cataratas, San Martin Island, and the lower circuit. Upon completion, visitors return to the Cataratas train station, which provides access to the Devil’s Throat or the visitor center.Distance: 1750 meters. Difficulty: Easy, no stairs. Estimated time: Approximately 2 hours.
  • Lower Circuit: This circuit offers a closer, more intimate experience with the falls, leading you to the base of several cascades. You’ll walk along boardwalks that bring you right next to the powerful water, feeling the spray and immense energy. This path provides stunning views from below, allowing you to appreciate the sheer height and volume of the falls.Distance: Approximately 1,700 meters (1.05 miles). Difficulty: Moderate, involves some stairs and uneven terrain. Estimated time: 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo): This is the most iconic and powerful section of Iguazu Falls. A long boardwalk extends over the river, leading you directly to the edge of the U-shaped chasm where the largest volume of water plunges down. The sheer force and roar of the water are awe-inspiring and unforgettable.Distance: Approximately 2.1 – 2.2 kilometers (1.3 – 1.4 miles) from Garganta Station. Difficulty: Easy, mostly flat boardwalks. Estimated time: 1 to 2 hours (including train ride).
  • Green Trail: A short, easy trail that serves as a shortcut connecting the visitor center to the Cataratas Station, where you can board the Ecological Train. It’s a pleasant walk through the jungle, offering a glimpse of the local flora and fauna.Distance: Approximately 650 meters (0.4 miles). Difficulty: Easy, flat. Estimated time: 10-15 minutes.

During the Christmas and New Year holidays (December 24-25 and December 31-January 1), the park maintains its regular operating hours without changes.

A map of the Argentine park is available. Visitors are encouraged to inquire at their hotel for a printed map, as they are often provided in the lobby. The map can also be printed from the high-resolution image available online.

The Brazilian Side: Panoramic Vistas

The Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls, established as a national park in 1939, is significantly larger than its Argentine counterpart, spanning approximately 180,000 hectares—three times the size of the Argentine park. When combined with the Argentine side, the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu offers a comprehensive and stunning panoramic view of the Iguazu Falls.

Exploring the Brazilian Circuit

The Parque Nacional do Iguaçu on the Brazilian side features a single primary circuit, extending approximately 1500 meters. While seemingly short, this section can take around 2 hours to complete due to the continuous and captivating views of the falls, encouraging frequent stops for photographs and appreciation of the scenery.
At the circuit’s conclusion lies a highlight of the Brazilian park: a vantage point just over 100 meters from an impressive 200-meter waterfall, where visitors can experience the refreshing spray. Rain ponchos are available for purchase along the route to protect clothing and electronic devices.
To reach the circuit’s starting point, visitors must take a bus from the park entrance. After purchasing tickets, proceed to the designated bus area on the right. Buses typically depart every 20-30 minutes. The bus makes three stops: the first for the Macuco Safari (highly recommended), the second at the beginning of the main circuit entrance, and the final stop at the circuit’s end, where an elevator provides access to a platform with the best views of the falls.
The path itself is not difficult, but it does include several stairs. For those wishing to avoid stairs, skipping the second stop and proceeding directly to the end, where an elevator is available, is an option. At the end of the circuit, a shopping center offers a variety of souvenirs, including caps, t-shirts, and backpacks. All major credit and debit cards are accepted.

Admission to Iguaçu National Park (Brazil)

As of 2024, the entrance fees for the Brazilian side of Iguazu National Park are: https://cataratasdoiguacu.com.br/
Admission to the Brazilian park includes access to the park, bus transportation within the park, and access to the main circuit.

Operating Hours of Iguaçu National Park (Brazil)

The Brazilian park is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (18:00 hs), with entry permitted until 4:30 p.m.
Similar to the Argentine side, the Brazilian park maintains its regular operating hours during the Christmas and New Year holidays (December 24-25 and December 31-January 1).

Map of Iguaçu National Park (Brazil Side)

A map of the Brazilian side is available. This park is generally simpler to navigate and may not require a map; visitors can follow signs to the bus that leads to the circuit entrance. The map can also be printed from the high-resolution image available online.
